The Henderson Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is set to welcome guest pianist Michael Sheppard for its last performance of the season, titled “WHAM!” The concert is free to attend and will take place Friday June 2nd at 7:30 p.m. at The Dollar Loan Center in Henderson.
Sheppard will take on the role of “The Ivory Crusader” as the last soloist of the HSO’s Heroes-themed season. The concert will open with a new piece by Mason Bates inspired by Steve Jobs. Sheppard will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3, which is considered one of the most difficult concerti to be performed. This concerto was the center of the movie “Shine” which won Geoffrey Rush an Academy Award for his role as the pianist David Helfgott.
“We are so excited to have Michael joining us for this performance,” said Alexandra Arrieche, Henderson Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director. “This season we want to highlight talented musicians and transform them into superheroes because we feel they deserve to be praised for the sacrifice and dedication they put into their craft.”
Sheppard has performed solo recitals and concertos around the world, including several solo Weill (Carnegie) Hall recitals and a solo Kennedy Center debut. He is a native of Philadelphia and resides in Baltimore, where he works at both the Peabody Conservatory and the Baltimore School for the Arts, sharing his love and understanding of music and the artistic process with future generations.
WHAM! will also feature two winners of the HSO’s Young Artists Competition, Antonio McDonald who plays the cello and Brennan Fischl on the clarinet.
